Understanding Groundwater Flow and Radionuclide Transport at the Dounreay Shaft

Quintessa has carried out a reinterpretation of the geology, hydrogeology and geochemistry of the Dounreay site in support of the Dounreay Site Restoration Plan. The primary focus of this study was the region surrounding the D1225 LLW and ILW disposal shaft, for which waste retrieval and environmental remediation are planned. In particular the project developed a 3D conceptual model for geology and groundwater flow in the vicinity of the shaft and placed this within a regional flow context. This included the development of a 2D finite difference flow model, using the SUTRA code, consistent with known information on rainfall, water table position, stream flows and borehole-measured values of hydraulic conductivity.
