David Hodgkinson

Following a PhD and post-doctoral positions in theoretical high-energy physics, David joined UKAEA Harwell to work on laser isotope separation and later the geological disposal of radioactive waste. For the past three decades he has been involved in providing quantitative support to energy and environmental decision-making including structured approaches to performance assessment and environmental safety cases, and mathematical modelling of heat and mass transport. David has served on a number of international committees related to radioactive waste disposal and has managed the major UK research and assessment programmes. From 1987 to 1999 he built Intera / QuantiSci into a successful international scientific consultancy and software business, and in March 1999 he founded Quintessa where he was Managing Director until December 2015 and is now Honorary Chairman.

David is interested in both fundamental physics and in how science and mathematics can be used to help address major energy and environmental challenges. He is a strong advocate of employee ownership as a fairer and more productive way of managing businesses. The sunshine and blue skies of Murcia provide the ideal location for walking in the mountains and by the Mediterranean, and for hitting “a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose”.
