Geological storage of carbon dioxide is being developed as a climate change mitigation option in pilot scale projects worldwide. Widespread deployment of this technology will depend on demonstrating that it is feasible, safe and acceptable to stakeholders, which will require:
- Selection of potential storage sites with robust containment characteristics.
- Development of monitoring and mitigation plans to deal with any leakage.
- Development and maintenance of online database of Features, Events and Processes of potential importance to CO2 geological storage.
- Risk assessment of storage systems in systematic and transparent ways.
